As a popular summer destination, the population of the island of Nantucket varies greatly during the seasons going from 10,000 to over 50,000 residents in the summer. A wonderful place to enjoy the weather and the great outdoors, Nantucket is also great for exploring the historical aspect of the region as well. Historical sites of interests that range from the pre-Civil War, a high concentration of Civil War and post Civil War structures.
Whaling History
Whaling brought many Europeans to the area in later years. The native American populations had been aware of the whales in the area, but were not active whale hunters, instead, choosing to utilize those which simply washed ashore. The industry of whaling became so ingrained in this culture of Nantucket with European arrival, that Herman Melville wrote the infamous novel “Moby Dick” and based the main characters from the island of Nantucket. As the whaling industry waned, so to did the populations of the island until the mid 20th century. Today, this isolation and abandonment of the area for years, preserved structures from eras that had mostly been destroyed in other areas, increasing the popularity of the area today as a site of historical and cultural importance.
