If you are heading to northern Europe on a trip these are two amazing islands that you should place at the top of your itinerary. They might not be the most popular in travel books or sites, but they are popular with the local culture and their home countries, which make them a great place to visit.
Way up north of the Arctic Circle, off the coast of Norway, is the Lofotens. It has the world’s largest elevated temperature anomalies relative to its high latitude. This is a magical land of 24 hours days during the summer months, fresh blueberries by the tons, and as much fresh cod as you want. The islands have for more than 1,000 years been the center of great cod fisheries, especially in winter, when the cod migrates south from the Barents Sea and gathers in Lofoten to spawn. It is an absolute nightmare of freezing cold and fog in the winter, so definitely set this as a destination in the summer. The sweeping vistas are inspiring. The sea is rich with life, and the world’s largest deep water coral reef is located west of Rost If you can, spend as much as a week exploring this island group which is rugged and adventurous. Bring your hiking boots and a raincoat and be prepared for a lot of fish on the locale menus.
Bornholm, Denmark is a little bit of Denmark stuck way off to the east in the Baltic Sea. It is a popular summer destination for Scandinavians’, so where the natives go is a sure bet if you’re a tourist wanting to experience life of the beaten tracks of all the other tourists. The landscape of the island consists of dramatic rock formations in the north, unlike the rest of Denmark which is very flat, sloping down towards forests, with farmlands in the middle and sandy beaches in the south. Take the bus down to the enormous fortress at the northwest of the island, and then take the mail boat, yes, the mail boat, out to Christianso, a tiny island off the coast of Bornholm where the Danes use to exile the politically troublesome.
