Paying Attention When You Travel

Posted on 01.13.12

Millions of travelers will head out on roads across the U.S. and throughout the world. While many travelers think that the only time they have to research their destination is when they are traveling outside the United States, however, each and every state in the U.S. has its own laws regarding travel as well, and many forget or do not know this. As an informed traveler, it is your job to make sure you know what the rules regarding travel are in your destination. In an effort to help you become a more informed traveler, Tradewinds Vacations reviews information to help you. Learn more about travel with reviews from Tradewinds Vacations.

Distracted Driving

Distracted driving has become one of the hottest topics regarding travel by car. With almost 5,500 people dying in car accidents in 2009 alone, laws regarding texting, talking on cell phones or smoking while you drive have been put in place in states throughout the country.

Here’s the facts: taken from Governors Highway Safety Association

  • Handheld Cell Phones- 9 states, D.C. and the Virgin Islands prohibit all drivers from using handheld cell phones while driving. Except for Maryland, all laws are primary enforcement—an officer may cite a driver for using a handheld cell phone without any other traffic offense taking place.
  • All Cell Phone Use- No state bans all cell phone use (handheld and hands-free) for all drivers, but many prohibit all cell phone use by certain drivers including novice and school bus drivers.
  • Text Messaging- 35 states, D.C. and Guam ban text messaging for all drivers

In addition to laws on use of cell phones and texting, other laws or penalties which vary from state to state include fees regarding drunk driving, motorcycle helmet laws, and speed limits and speeding. It is your job to pay attention to what is going on around you and make sure that you are following the laws and are aware of situations around you. Fees and penalties for injuring road workers or speeding in areas have increased and using the excuse of you didn’t know will not make a difference. Be a smart and aware traveler and avoid problems during your next road trip.
