One of the most well known and visited attractions on the island of Oahu, Diamond Head Mountain, right outside of the city of Honolulu offers visitors a unique travel destination. More than just a trek up the an ancient volcano, (as if that were not enough), you spend some time walking up steps carved inside the mountain which date back to the days of Pearl Harbor and before, making it an experience of both natural and historical significance. Looming high above the city, Diamond Head may not be high by all standards as it stands at just 762 feet above see level, given that the rest of the island is at sea level, this 700 plus foot ancient volcanic tuff is certainly an imposing figure. Just one of many cones, vents and flows, this part of the island is known to geologist as the Honolulu Volcanic Serious. Other famous features withing the series include Koko Head, Hanauma Bay and Punchbowl Crater.
Exploring The Monument

Diamond Head is located in Diamond Head State Monument, part of the state park system in Oahu. The trial, called Diamond Head Summit Trail was built in 1908 as part of the defense of the island. Just under a mile, the trail can be difficult as it ascends 560 feet up stairs, a walkway and through a tunnel to the top where you emerge into the light.
A visit to the monument is worth the time, plan on spending at least a couple hours there to maximize your experience.
